Pocahontas County Jail Roster Overview
The Pocahontas County Sheriff's Office is the local law-enforcement contact for county arrest questions, sheriff-held reports, and local records, but official research did not locate a sheriff-run Pocahontas County jail roster. Current jail custody is handled through WVDCR's regional jail system. For most local arrests that require detention, the practical facility is Tygart Valley Regional Jail and Correctional Facility.
That means Pocahontas County inmate records have to be read by custody type. The regional jail search is for current jail custody. The WVDCR prison and supervision locator is for state offenders in prison, active supervision, or parole status. The Bureau of Prisons and ICE tools are separate federal systems. A person can move from one system to another after bond, dismissal, sentencing, transfer, or a detainer from another agency.
Use the Pocahontas County Inmate Roster
The fastest public search path is the WV Regional Jail Offender Search. It searches regional jail inmates by name. The Daily Incarcerations page is useful when the question is whether someone was admitted under Pocahontas County on a recent date or which institution is receiving admissions.
- Open the regional jail offender search when the person's name is known.
- Enter at least the first three letters of the last name. Add first name only if the results need narrowing.
- Review each match for facility, status, and any warning language before relying on the result.
- Use Daily Incarcerations and choose Pocahontas from the county dropdown for recent county admission checks.
- Call Tygart Valley at (304) 637-0382 if the arrest is recent, the search is down, or release status matters.
Pocahontas County Roster Search Fields
The WVDCR jail search is narrow by design. It does not use a Pocahontas County booking number field in the captured form. The required input is the last name, and the page uses reCAPTCHA to reduce automated searches. The Daily Incarcerations page works differently because it uses a county dropdown and then displays daily admissions by county and institution.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name (Partial or Full) | Text | Yes | Enter at least the first three letters; maximum length is 100 characters. |
| First Name (Optional) | Text | No | Use for common last names or when several matches appear. |
| reCAPTCHA | Anti-bot check | Conditional | Must be completed when the page presents it. |
| County on Daily Incarcerations | Dropdown | Yes on daily page | The county list includes Pocahontas. |
WVDCR states that information is updated regularly but can change quickly. The warning is not boilerplate for Pocahontas County users. A person may be in transport, newly released, booked under an alternate name, held for another jurisdiction, or moved into state custody.
Pocahontas County Inmate Profile Fields
The research pass could not capture a full live Pocahontas or Tygart Valley profile because the official systems use reCAPTCHA and tokenized result links. The official disclaimers do confirm which fields require caution. Do not treat a roster charge as the same thing as a court conviction, and do not treat a listed release date as final without checking the facility or court.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Name | The search inputs support last name and optional first name. |
| Facility / Institution | Daily pages show institutions and admissions, including Tygart Valley when listed. |
| County | Daily Incarcerations lets users choose Pocahontas from the county dropdown. |
| Current location | WVDCR warns that a listed location may not reflect true current placement. |
| Release date | Release information may change and should be confirmed for time-sensitive use. |
| Custody status | Status can change through bond, court order, transfer, or agency hold. |
| Sentencing information | WVDCR says court records should be consulted for the underlying criminal action. |
Pocahontas County Jail and DOC Records
The regional jail roster and DOC locator answer different questions. Tygart Valley is the regional jail channel for Pocahontas County arrests and jail custody. Denmar Correctional Center and Jail is a WVDCR state facility in Pocahontas County for adult male offenders, and its lookup path is the state prison and supervision locator. The wrong search can make a valid custody record look missing.
| Custody | Where to Look | When to Use It |
|---|---|---|
| Pretrial or county jail sentence | WV Regional Jail offender search or Daily Incarcerations | New arrests, jail holds, and jail sentences routed through Tygart Valley. |
| State prison or parole | WVDCR DOC search | Sentenced state offenders, active supervision, prison, or parole. |
| Federal sentenced inmate | BOP inmate locator | Federal inmates from 1982 to present. |
| Immigration detention | ICE Online Detainee Locator | Search by A-number or by name, country of birth, and birth date. |
Pocahontas County Jail Facilities
The facility list is short, but the distinction is important. One facility page covers the regional jail used for county jail custody. The other covers a state facility inside Pocahontas County. A new arrestee is not automatically a Denmar inmate simply because Denmar is local.

Pocahontas County Booking Process
A Pocahontas County arrest may begin with the Sheriff's Office, Marlinton Police Department, West Virginia State Police, conservation or natural resources officers, or another agency. If the person is not cited and released, custody is routed through the regional jail system. Booking can include identity checks, property control, search, fingerprints or photograph when required, medical and mental-health screening, and classification for safety and housing.
West Virginia magistrate court handles many initial appearances. W. Va. Code § 50-4-2a allows initial appearance and arraignment by video in proper cases, and W. Va. Code § 62-1C-1a governs pretrial release conditions. Bond, no-bond holds, detainers, capias orders, and transfers can all affect whether a person stays listed in jail custody.
Pocahontas County Jail Visitation
Tygart Valley visits are non-contact and scheduled through an inmate request. The inmate must submit the facility's request form to the visitation office within the published weekly request window. Visitors not listed on the approved request are not eligible to visit. The rules also limit visits to one adult and two minor children or two adults, with one visit per month and 30-minute intervals.
| Day | Hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | No visitation | Facility schedule. |
| Tuesday | 3:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. | No appointments after 7:30 p.m. |
| Wednesday | No visitation | Facility schedule. |
| Thursday | No visitation | Facility schedule. |

Adult visitors must sign the logbook and show valid government photo ID. Searches may include canine searches, magnetometer, x-ray, and pat searches. Personal items such as purses, cell phones, pocketknives, diaper bags, and watches are not allowed in the visitation area. The rules also state there is no local transportation or bus service, so Pocahontas County visitors should call before leaving home.
Contact a Pocahontas County Inmate
WVDCR uses a centralized scanned-mail process. Letters should list the inmate's first and last name, OID number, and full facility name, with no abbreviations, then use PO Box 336, Phoenix, MD 21131. The sender must include a full return address with complete first and last name. The captured rules say no photographs, no multiple offenders in one envelope, no attachments or enclosures, and only handwritten or typed letters are allowed to be scanned.

Pocahontas County Records Requests
If a jail search does not answer the question, use West Virginia FOIA to ask the custodian that holds the record. W. Va. Code § 29B-1-3 gives a right to inspect or copy public records unless an exemption applies. W. Va. Code § 29B-1-4 explains exemptions and redactions. A request should be narrow and factual: name, date or date range, arresting agency, record type, and preferred delivery method.
For sheriff-held reports, contact the Pocahontas County Sheriff's Office at 900 Tenth Avenue, Marlinton, WV 24954, phone 304-799-4445. For custody status, call Tygart Valley. For filed charges and case copies, use the Pocahontas Circuit Clerk or Magistrate Clerk. For formal case progress, the Pocahontas County court records after jail arrest page explains the court side of the record.
The county's official sheriff page uses an elected-official contact form rather than a detention-records portal. If that route is used, the request should have a clear subject line and enough facts for staff to route it, including the person's name, date, arresting agency, and whether the request concerns an incident report, arrest record, or jail booking record. Uploads are limited by the county form, so a mailed written request may be cleaner for formal FOIA use. Keep a copy of the request and any response.
Note: Confirm custody and facility placement before sending money, driving to Belington, or relying on a release date.
